Chengwatana State Forest offers miles and miles of outdoor entertainment to Minnesota locals. These are just a few of the activities you can participate in at this state park.
Fishing
Chengwatana State Forest has three rivers that flow throughout it — the Kettle, St. Croix, and Snake River. Among the fish you can encounter in the state forest watershed are walleye, northern pike, perch, or bass. Make sure you have an active fishing license, as the state park requires it. You will find many public fishing piers throughout the park.
Horseback Riding
Many local horse owners enjoy taking their horses for a stroll down the 20-mile Willard Munger State Trail. This state trail is actually a connection of numerous local trails that can take you from Hinckley to Duluth. Following the trail, you will get a glimpse of the true beauty of Minnesota. The trail runs directly along the historic railroad path. The railroad was an important part of fighting the Hinckley fire of the 19th century. For a truly unique experience, visit the Willard Munger State Trail during the fall to view the foliage.
Geocaching
Geocaching can take you to some of the most unknown destinations within the park. Geocaching encourages you to hunt through local areas to find hidden items. Download an app to your smartphone to pull up the approximate location of hidden items or read user hints from other geocachers who have found the items before you. Some of the items have a small paper inside that allows you to sign your name, indicating that you were able to find the treasure. Larger geocaches might have souvenirs like stickers or other small toys.
Camping
With so many recreational activities available in Chengwatana State Forest, you are going to want more time to explore. Reconnect with the local Minnesota nature and rent a campsite for the weekend. There are individual, group, horse, and dispersed campsites available. There are available amenities to improve your camping trip, such as drinking water, fire rings, and picnic tables. Remember to preserve the integrity of the forest — don’t cut down any trees or leave garbage behind.
Snake River campground is a popular choice. Although it is considered primitive, the campground offers some of the best views within the park. Parts of the campsite back up to the Snake River water trail, and there is a boating dock available for campers. There are minimal campsites available, so make sure you book early.
Four-Wheeling
The expansive lands of Chengwatana State Forest make it a great spot for four-wheeling. There are specific trails designed just for four-wheeling, and you might even see some of the local wildlife along the trails. There are 16 miles of Class 1 and Class 2 ATV trails and over 20 miles of snowmobiling trails.
